STORIES BEHIND THE DATA
Truancy Mitigation
In 2012 first year superintendent Robert Webb initiated an effort to deal with the district-wide chronic absenteeism. He and the principal team established a partnership with the Center for Restorative Programs and developed a comprehensive attendance mediation program to deal with the many issues that result in student chronic absenteeism. As a result the district has significantly reduced chronic absences in each of the last four school years, [as much as 62% in some schools]. This model has led to several other San Luis Valley districts adopting elements of the Monte Vista District's plan and is also gaining statewide interest as noted in this recent article [click here for link].

Monte Vista Marching Band
Monte Vista High School Pirate Marching Bands have become the definition of success. The program is the dominant program in Southern Colorado and has garnered numerous state and regional band competition championships. Students regularly arrive at school at 6:30 am in order to get additional time on the field as they seek "perfection" in the lines and notes. This program includes several home schooled students whose parents recognize excellence and want their children to be a part of an outstanding tradition.
